The Big Quit: What Is It? And What Does it Mean for Mental Health Professionals?

WHAT IS IT?

Over 20 million people quit their jobs the last half of 2021, in what some are calling The Big Quit or The Great Resignation. The COVID-19 pandemic has shifted the perspectives of many when it comes to work and priorities. Toxic work culture and/or burnout are already a reality for folks in fields such as education, hospitality, or social services, but the strain of these changes have caused many to walk away from their jobs. Many are looking for better pay, better flexibility, and better work environments.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS?

In the mental health field, we unfortunately know too much about the effects of burnout. And yes, it it possible get tired when doing what you love. We either know or have been the colleague scarfing down lunch in 5 minutes before a session or putting off vacation until "things settle down" at work. If you are prayerfully considering your "Big Quit" or taking a leap of faith, here are some things to consider when looking for your next position.

SOME THINGS TO REFLECT ON…

How do you hope to reimagine your work? Sometimes it's about remembering your "why" and reevaluating your "how."

What are you prioritizing now when looking for your next job? Perhaps it is schedule flexibility, remote work, paid family leave, or all of the above. Make a list of what matters to you in a work environment and culture.

Are you a considering making the jump from agency work to private practice? How can you educate yourself on this process?

Create a career vision board! A shift in career is a serious consideration. Take time to pause and pray, asking God for vision regarding your next steps. Then, get creative by mapping it together with images and clips.
